- Eat some chewy food regularly. Use it or lose it. Soft food is for the toothless.
- Eat a proper diet. This includes regular intake of animal proteins, including liver, which must be digested properly. Also included are good fats for the fat soluble vitamins. If serious about maintaining a good set of gnashers, the only sugar intake comes from a piece or two of fresh fruit daily. No fruit juices and so on. Avoid pre-prepared foods.
- All whole grains, nuts and pulses MUST be soaked prior to eating. These three food groups ((Whole grains include wholewheat, rye, barley, oats, brown rice. Pulses consist of foods like lentils, chick peas, kidney beans etc)) contain anti-nutrients called phytates. An anti-nutrient binds to minerals such as magnesium, zinc, calcium, iron and manganese and removes them from the body. These nutrients are vital to dental health (and our health as a whole.)
- Eat plenty of vegetables to keep the saliva neutral or slightly alkaline.
- We must generate plenty of spit to keep the teeth and gums healthy. To help this, we need a daily intake of fish oils and borage oil. Click on linked blog for further explanation. And drink plenty of plain water every day.
- Avoid anti-bacterial mouthwashes. This stuff kills all bacteria – the good stuff along with the bad.
- Take vitamin D3 supplementation. This helps strengthen the bones, so our teeth will not fall out of their sockets.
- Take a course of Cod liver oil ((A reliable brand of Cod liver oil is Nordic Naturals. This is not a blue coke moment!)) for the vitamin A. Vitamin A is a vital nutrient for gum health. Liver is a rich source of vitamin A, hence the need to eat it regularly.
- Take a high quality Vitamin C with good staying power in the body. Low vit C levels lead to receding gums and gums becoming red and spongy.
- If there are problems in the teeth or gums, a daily mouthwash with sea-salt water will work wonders.
- To deep clean the teeth and gums, try ‘oil pulling’. To do this, swish 1 tablespoon of organic coconut or olive oil around the mouth for 10 – 20 mins. Do not spit out down the sink or fun will be had later unblocking the sink.
- Actively reduce stress. Meditate. Do whatever appeals most. But do reduce stress levels. Stress makes the body more acidic and acidic spit destroys teeth.
